Sales Team Meltdown: How Customer Friendly Are Your Sales Team?
How customer friendly are your sales team.
I thought you might like this reflection on customer service that was reported just over a week ago in the US at an Apple store.
Woman 1: (Late 60s) I’m looking for a J-Phone. My grandson wants me…
Guy Clerk: (Early 20s, black clothes, designer glasses.) (Sneers.) We don’t carry J-phones.
Woman 1: This is the Apple store? Yes, J-phones.
Guy Clerk: Sorry. No Js. Any other letters?
Woman 1: (Confused) Uh…
Other Woman: (Good samaritan) She means “I”. What’s wrong with you?
Guy Clerk: Oh. “I.” Of course. iPhones. We carry them.
Woman 1: (Places her outdated phone on counter next to iPhone) Isn’t a phone a phone? What’s the difference between these?
Guy Clerk: You mean other than yours was made before the Industrial Revolution, before dinosaurs roamed the earth…and no one living in this century would be caught…
Woman 1: You’re not happy are you? You think you’re better than being a sales person at the mall.
Guy Clerk: (surprised, pauses.) No. Yes. I guess…
Woman 1: You’re not. You’re a sales clerk and you’re rude and small. I’d like to speak with your supervisor.
Guy Clerk: (contrite) Look, I’m…
Woman 1: Now. (Sales guy still hesitates.) Not tomorrow. Now.
A great lesson to actually communicate and evaluate what our sales teams are up to. It reminds me of a number of communications I have overheard in a certain electrical store in the UK beginning with C. I won’t name it as It has pretty good prices and I am a customer!
Encourage your sales team to respect every customer they have. It will bring them untold benefits. Let’s give you a very recent example.
The inlaws are staying till Monday. Which is really positive. They do the garden. By toilet rolls! Cook food and bring high class Marks and Spencer biscuits. What more could you want. Talk about service.
Last night we had a amusing conversation about white Carrots? Yes white carrots. To the knowledgeable vegetable experts amongst us they are actually Parsnips. How ever mum in law gets a bit confused and calls them white carrots.
Drum roll please and get ready for a gold star Tesco. Earlier this week Barbara alias Mum in law asked one of the young sales guys for white carrots. He promptly found them for her weighed them out and then very sweetly wispered in her ear that they are actually called Parsnips.
Now yes this is an amusing story and yet here I am sharing it with potentially over a few thousand people that visit this blog. On top of that it will be shared around a number of our friends as well. Do you think that the Brits that visit this blog and my friends might be more disposed to Tesco? I think so.
I am sure your sales team already do this? and as a sales manager one really useful sales manager duties to remind people of the obvious. It can bring untold free promotion and branding onto your products and services.
In case you didn’t guess its Delia’s winter vegetables tonight. Marinated for 24 hours! no less.
Have a great weekend
To You and Your teams success
